Harriet Bernstein and Luisa Paster are residents of Ocean Grove, NJ. In 2007 they were denied the use of the Ocean Grove boardwalk pavilion - a public space location - for their civil union ceremony by the Ocean Grove Camp Meeting. A grassroots movement sprang from the community in support of the couple, resulting in Ocean Grove United. After reluctantly suing with the help of the ACLU and battling through two federal courts, Harriet and Luisa won their discrimination case in 2012. They continue the fight for LGBTQ equality, and are proud that Ocean Grove United has developed into a strong civic organization that supports the entire community - even working together with the Camp Meeting to achieve good things for all.
